It works.
I'm using the flat end of a 5lb maul with this device, and I love it. For the first time I can easily and safely split logs down into kindling of a size that make starting the woodstove very quick and easy. I love that the design does a decent (not perfect) job of holding the log in place for, so that my hands can hold the maul. Some logs take 4 or 5 whacks before they split, while others split first try. I don't have to swing the maul very hard... usually my first try is a light tap, which either splits it or sets it in place better. My second swing is a little harder, and if that does not do the trick, my third swing is a little harder yet. I never lift the maul head higher than my shoulder, and never give it more than what I would consider a medium swing. I have NOT needed to secure the bottom so far. Great product.

Excellent construction
Cast iron. Very solid. This is a tool built to last a lifetime. The blade is quite sharp to split firewood when it comes out of the box, but a little touch up on the blade won't hurt. I recommend a diamond stone of around 1000 grit.

great tool
bought this as a gift for my daughter for her fire pit wood splitting. This thing is nicely made and fully cast metal. No weld joints. One review I read before ordering said the blade wasn't sharp. The one I received is very sharp for a casting. It's designed in New Zealand and manufactured in Australia. No made in China copy. It's ideal for making "store bought" firewood into kindling and smaller logs. Great for your fire pit or campfire and much safer than the ax or hatchet.

Great for fire pit starter kindling
I love this thing. I bring it out to the fire pit along with a 5 pound sledge. In just a few minutes I've split enough wood for a night at the fire pit. My only tip is make sure the splitter is on a level surface. I usually use a large log, but if it's not level it will bounce and slide a bit when it's hit with the sledge. I don't know if my neighbors like it when I'm hammering away as it can be loud, but I don't like it when they leave their dogs out all night barking away, so I guess we're even! Anyway, this is a great time saver that's fun to use!

Surprisingly efficient
I was skeptical. Was I really going to be able to make kindling from larger logs with this. It didn't seem sharp enough. Was I going to have to use a sledgehammer to split a piece of wood? I bought a 4 pound mallet, line up a piece of wood, gave it a hard enough tap to "stick" into the "blade" and then whacked it not so hard and sure enough it split easily. I had my 12 year old son try it and it was no problem for him either. This is a definite must if you have a wood burning stove of fireplace insert. If you are a casual fire maker, then I am not so sure it would be worth it for you.

Easy and Safe
This is a very clever tool for making kindling and it was invented by a teenage girl! Bravo. My husband and I are in our late 60's and we both found it very easy to split a log into perfect kindling sized pieces. It was amazing how quickly we ended up with a box of perfect kindling for our stove. We screwed the splitter onto a round of wood and put that on top of some concrete blocks so that it's at an easy height to work on. I bought a 4 pound sledge and it's pretty heavy but very effective in splitting with just a couple of whacks. It all feels a whole lot safer and easier than using an ax or hatchet. I highly recommend this tool and I am glad that I bought the original made in New Zealand .

Cut your own kindling from your wood i
Actually this is my second purchase, I gifted my first one to my neighbor. When I moved I knew that I wanted another one because my new home had a fireplace, I've always used this product for my outside fire pit, now or serves both. I've never mounted it as suggested because the base is adequate alone. Yeah if you want to split your wood that's already been split once this will do the trick!

Works great! Easy to use.
Works great for splitting logs. We use it all the time to split wood for our pot belly stove.

Very Easy To Use
A great camping tool. Easy to use. Not just for Seniors! Tap wood with a small 3 lb. hand sledge instead of swinging a hatchet and counting your fingers! I liked it so much, I sent one to a friend.

INCREDIBLE VALUE
Best buy beyond doubt if you favor small kindling or 1/16 splits. Works like a charm but does need to be screwed down. Lots of fun. Gave away 6 for xmas presents. Forget the axe use this implement. Most cases start with a half log but can process whole fire logs if the girth is smaller than the circumference of the unit. Lodgpole is one hit as are cherry, apple. Redoak takes two blows.
