I have only lifted lightweight objects, anvil leg vices, rider mower, and so on, a few hundred pounds, and it lifts with almost no effort. Both hooks are large hoist sling style hooks. The brake is automatic. You pull on either end of the chain and it lifts or lowers. There is no manual unlocking. The chains are covered with smelly black grease that you may want to remove and replace.

Very nice product, a beast of mechanics and will be put to heavy use. Make sure you don't get chain dirty, they come pre greased.
