Creosote buildup from burning beetle-kill spruce had almost completely blocked the chimney cap's wire mesh; and January's Rocky Mountain snow made finding a different way to cleaning the chimney than working outside on scaffolding necessary. With this chimney sweep kit I was able to clean my 16' X 6" chimney through the fuel loading door of my Hearthstone Green Mountain 40 woodstove. Preparing the wood stove to access the chimney required removing the baffle, the rear heat shield and and the catalytic combustor blocks. I replaced the catalytic combustor access plate before cleaning the chimney. The chimney sweep brush head fit through the narrow space where the chimney pipe connects to the woodstove. The height of the fuel loading door opening is about 10" and the distance from the opening to the back of the woodstove is also about 10". I recommend passing the flexible pvc brush rods through a 2-in x 2-in dia x Hub 90-Degree Schedule 40 PVC DWV Elbow (about $3) rather than trying to hold the brush rod with your hand. Using the pvc elbow as a brace allows the rods to spin freely through a tight arc as you hold the elbow below the access to the chimney with one hand and as you control your drill with your other hand.
