This was the start of converting my outboard tiller to a steering console and remote control. Results are like it came from the factory that way. The steering is smooth and comfortable. The steering wheel and assembly is solid and sturdy. The cable slides perfectly through the unit.

I put this on my 17ft work skiff, turns smooth and easy, no binding, in fact no problems.

This is a solid, easily-installed steering system for a new boat-or replacement for an older system that's turned balky with age. The kit includes all the parts needed for installation, from the bracket that holds the steering wheel to the console to the steering gear/helm/rudder inside the console, and the cable and the bolts for the rear of the boat. Note that you will need to make sure of the correct placement of your bracket if you're doing an initial install and not directly retrofitting the system. Install the bracket too low and the plastic piece that sits behind the steering wheel to cover the bracket may have its bottom edge fall below the bottom edge of the console. After using the template to cut holes for the bracket in the console you may want to temporarily attach the steering wheel to the gearbox to ease the process of snapping the cable into the gearbox without the gearbox being mounted to the bracket. Once the cable is attached you can back the steering wheel off and attach the gearbox with cable in place to the bracket before installing the cover and reinstalling and finalizing the steering wheel position. Be sure to grease the cable rod before installing it to the motor. You might find it easier to work from the rear of the boat to the front installing the cable.

For the money this helm kit is great. I install this stuff for a living. Cable quality is the same or better than most brands in big catalogs. Steering wheel itself is cheap and flimsy plastic. That seems to be the only cheap part of the kit.

Building out a 14 foot Boston Whaler to use as our commuter boat and chose this steering kit. It comes with everything needed to have remote steering installed in an afternoon. The components are all well made and look likely to hold up well to the marine environment. The instructions are lacking, but the installation was handled by our mechanic, so not an issue for us. On a larger motor, I would likely go with a hydraulic system, but as this boat has a thirty-horsepower Suzuki, there isn't much of an advantage to hydraulic. Simple, mechanical is the way to go.

This marine steering system kit works great. I used it to replace the old steering system on my boat, and I can clearly feel that the steering wheel is no longer so heavy. The replacement and installation were not complicated, and it came with a manual. I set it up myself in just over half an hour.
